Flip & Flo Challenge ‘22
Calling all Portland musicians, producers, DJs, MCs and vocalists! Portland Hip-Hop Week and PDX Black Excellence are inviting you to show your skills and join the collaborative Flip & Flo Challenge. Get creative, put on for the Rose City and have your talents heard!
how does it work?
We at PDX Black Excellence have provided an official audio sample from the northwest's rich musical history -- this year it's from Portland's historic Albina neighborhood. We're proud to honor the classic soul group, The Legendary Beyons, whose 1976 song "There We Were, Here We Are" will be the basis for the 2022 beat challenge.
Any Portland beatmaker that wants to participate has until August 10th to make an original beat using the official audio sample (could be any section of the song, a drum break, a chorus, a snippet/sample of the song...chop it up however you want to & get creative!).
PDX Black Excellence will then release those submitted beats to the public on August 11th.
After that, any Portland vocalist, rapper or singer that wants to participate has until August 20th to record original vocals on those beats (flex on it!), and send it to us to be entered for a chance to participate in this year's live event.
The finalists for best song entries will then be invited to perform their song live during the Portland Hip-Hop Week Flip & Flo Challenge event on August 24th at Alberta Street Pub, where a live audience & a panel of official judges will vote to decide who takes home the 2022 crown!

All original entries should be between 1-4 minutes in length
Maximum of 1 submission per person
Please include your name (or artist name), track title (name of your beat), and any social media or music streaming platform information (where can people find your music?) in your submission email. If you’d like to include an image of yourself as well, we’ll include that in the streaming event while we play your music. The goal of this event is to shine light on Portland’s talent and give artists’ voices a chance to be heard, so go hard and good luck!
